What is IPL?

Intense Pulsed Light therapy, known as IPL for short, is a non-ablative, non-invasive skin rejuvenation treatment. This procedure harnesses high-intensity pulses of visible light and uses them to improve, smooth, and soften a person’s overall complexion. This treatment is particularly well-suited to addressing uneven or red skin tones.

IPL is most commonly used to address:

  • Age Spots
  • Dyschromia
  • Freckles
  • Mild Fine Lines and Wrinkles

How Does it Work?

During an IPL treatment, high-intensity pulses of visible light are aimed at the area of uneven coloration the patient would like to address through treatment. This visible light is absorbed into the skin’s deeper, inner structures that are responsible for the appearance of pigmentation.

While traditional laser treatments utilize only one wavelength of light, multiple wavelengths are used during IPL treatments. Each of these wavelengths are absorbed by different structures within the skin, allowing the intense pulses of light to affect the variety of structures responsible for the formation of age spots, dyschromia, freckles, fine lines, and wrinkles. Because this variety of wavelengths are delivered in a series of pulses, rather than a single, concentrated stream, the skin is exposed to less heat, leading to shorter downtimes and a more comfortable treatment experience.

What is an IPL Treatment Like?

Each IPL treatment takes a quick 20 minutes to complete, with between four and six total sessions needed for optimal results. We recommend that patients space each treatment between three and six weeks apart from the last. The sensation of this treatment is often compared to the feeling of a rubber band lightly snapping against the skin.

Is IPL Right for Me?

If you’re interested in improving the appearance of mild pigmentation or other skin imperfections, you may be a good candidate for IPL. This procedure provides patients with beautiful, lasting improvements to skin complexion without the need for complex treatments or extended downtime.
