Scars often tell painful stories. They can be haunting reminders of previous sicknesses, acne breakouts, injuries, and surgeries. At the office of Melanie L. Adams, M.D., P.A. Dermatology in Columbia, Maryland, we have a treatment that is particularly effective at making those painful reminders disappear. Below are three ways the Lutronic Genius® RF Microneedling treatment lives up to its “genius” name when treating scars.
Scars generally arise when too little or too much collagen is produced during the healing phase. As the skin attempts to repair itself following an injury or other trauma, too little collagen may be made during the process. This results in an area that is depressed or recessed compared to the surrounding skin, a type of scarring known as “atrophic.” When too much collagen is produced, it can result in the opposite – a “hypertrophic” or raised scar. Dr. Adams will evaluate your scar and recommend treatment based on its characteristics and other factors.
The Lutronic Genius® system combines both the power of RF (radio frequency) energy and microneedling to correct many textural concerns, from wrinkles to scars. It does so by triggering positive structural changes deep within the skin. Microneedling involves creating small openings in the skin to trigger the healing process. As the skin heals, it naturally produces collagen. RF energy may be delivered through these micro-channels or punctures. This helps to amplify the collagen remodeling or rebuilding process. As more collagen is gradually produced over time, you will notice an improvement in the appearance of scars and other depressions, such as lines and wrinkles.
Any time you have a technology or procedure that stimulates the production of structural components on the skin, you generally enjoy longer-lasting results. That’s because these treatments bring about real and beneficial changes in the skin. While you can see some improvement soon after your initial treatment, collagen production is a process. It can take a few months for the full results to be seen. Once you have seen those full results, expect to keep them for two to three years (depending on your age and skin condition). Collagen continues to be broken down with age, so maintenance treatments will be needed to continue to keep those scars and painful memories of past injuries and illnesses in the past.
