With most forms of hair removal, the shaved, tweezed, or waxed hairs grow back as fast as you remove them. This is not the case with professional hair removal services. Due to these technology-assisted services’ unique design and capabilities, you can enjoy lasting, hair-free, and smooth skin. At the office of Dr. Melanie L. Adams, we use advanced laser technology to support long-lasting results for our patients in the Columbia, Hanover, Odenton, and Ellicott City, Maryland areas. Our team is pleased to provide more insights on what to expect post-treatment.
Yes, the laser can achieve permanent hair reduction. By that, the laser can decrease the amount of hair in the treated areas by 90%. This reduction is largely permanent, although pregnancy and other hormonal changes can trigger hair regrowth. Every patient is different, too, so for optimal results, you may wish to have a “touch-up” once every two to three years. For many patients, such “maintenance” pales compared to the time, money, and hassle of a never-ending series of shaving, waxing, tweezing, and other temporary hair removal methods.
The “magic” is in the technology and process. We direct the laser toward the treatment site, which can be most parts of the face and body, even delicate areas such as the upper lip. The laser is then activated. The laser energy selectively targets the melanin or pigment in the hair follicle. The powerful energy from the laser is then absorbed by the melanin in the hair, which permanently damages the follicle. Other forms of hair removal remove the visible hairs; they do not damage the follicle where the hair grows.
We immediately apply cold (such as compresses or ice packs) to the treated areas. An anti-inflammatory cream can also help to ease irritation and swelling. You may continue to use products like hydrocortisone as directed by Dr. Adams. We suggest avoiding makeup until your skin no longer looks and feels irritated. As with many services at our office, treatment can make your skin more photosensitive – or vulnerable to damage from UV light from the sun. Regardless of skin type and tone, our patients should incorporate a good broad-spectrum sunscreen into their skincare routine. Applying this sunscreen is particularly important following cosmetic treatments. Try to minimize your time out in the sun, and wear UV-protective garments and other sun-shielding clothes if you have to be outside.
It depends on how you look at “one time.” You are correct if you are referring to one initial series of treatments. However, if you are referring to a “one visit and done” treatment, that’s impossible due to hair growth. Hairs grow in cycles. Some hairs may be in an active growth phase, whereas others may be in a transitional or resting phase. Due to this, it’s necessary to treat hair at different times, which requires more than one treatment session. The specific number of initial treatments you will need depends on numerous factors, including the areas to be treated, the thickness of your hair, and your body’s response to treatment.
We look forward to shedding more light on how to shed hair during a consultation at the office of Dr. Melanie L. Adams in Columbia, MD. Serving the Hanover, Odenton, and Ellicott City, our team can be reached at (410) 910-2366 to schedule your appointment today.
